Solutions

No CBM operator wants stranded capital wells, stranded capital CBM wells are wells that have required a great deal of capital to plan, permit and drill, but still are not producing. Yet, it's not uncommon for an Operator to wind up with a well that can not be produced or even drilled because one piece of the water permitting process is held up awaiting one or several required permit approvals. As of October 2005, there have been 22,300 CBM wells drilled in the WPRB of which 14,034 are producing leaving over 8,000 wells shut-in and not producing for one reason or another.

There have been many methods other than surface discharge used to deal with water issues faced by the CBM industry, i.e. impoundment to irrigation, atomization and treatment. In the right situation each method is economically justifiable, yet each method has its limitations.
