Treatment and discharge of produced water is used primarily in areas close to a major drainage, like the Powder River. Winter discharges require an NPDES permit. The DEQ currently will issue a direct discharge permit for only winter time discharge (8 months) and prohibiting discharge during the irrigation season. Water is treated to meet the approved standard. If the water treatment facility is located away from the river, and the potential exists for the treated water to pick up salts while in transit, a pipeline must be laid to the river for direct discharge. The water treatment and discharge method is perhaps the most costly of all CBM water disposal methods yet there are companies that determine that use of this method is the best way to produce their wells.
